You have been promoted at work because everyone trusted that you were the right person for the promotion. But self-doubt begins to creep in as you prepare for this new position. Questions like, “Am I good enough for this?” surface.

This feeling, often called imposter syndrome, is a familiar struggle among professionals, even high-achieving ones. It is a private battle that only you can overcome to unlock your career potential.

Interestingly, self-doubt is a necessary path towards career growth and success. At various stages of our lives, we all experience mistrust in our abilities or qualities.

However, you must find strength in your doubts and use them as a springboard for advancement. Here are four great tips to overcome self-doubt and develop greatly in your profession in Nigeria

1. Write it All

What undermines your confidence? What goals are you facing? What causes you to doubt yourself? Write these things down accordingly. Also, write the non-negotiable goal that you would not compromise on.

For example, when you newly acquire a position at the office,  you might question your ability to fulfil the responsibilities that come with it. If you continue in doubt, you may never be able to accomplish your best. The best way to overcome this is to write it all down.

What activities are expected of you? What responsibilities will you have? What are your objectives, key performance indicators, and the criteria that will demonstrate your qualifications compared to the previous administration?

Write all of this down and organise it in the appropriate order. Once you have written them, move on to identify what undermines your confidence. List your areas of fear and self-doubt. Recognising your potential weaknesses or self-doubts can empower you to overcome them.

2. Celebrate Your Achievements

Take a moment to travel down memory lane and reflect on your accomplishments from years past and recent times.

If you could get that job, admission, promotion, or start a company, you are meant for greatness. Think about how you achieved that job or promotion, secured that admission or scholarship, or launched your company. If you succeeded before, you will again.

Remember, your current position is well within your capabilities; it is not beyond your reach.

Your qualifications have brought you to this new level, so trust in your past achievements and believe in your potential to take you beyond. Celebrate every milestone, no matter how small, as a step toward your continued success!

3. Take up Professional Training

Embrace a mindset of continuous learning to overcome self-doubt. Hear what others say and learn from them; remember, many successful individuals have faced similar challenges and their experiences can contribute invaluably.

Identify your weaknesses and understand the root of your self-doubt. Engage in courses, workshops, seminars, or motivational talks to learn from those who have been through similar struggles. This will help you build your confidence and overcome self-doubt.

4. Maintain Positivity

Consistently practice strong optimism to foster your growth. Surround yourself with positive energy and shut out a negative mindset

Take time to speak kindly to yourself. Believe in your abilities, hold your head high, and declare the success you envision. Replace imposter syndrome with uplifting affirmations that reinforce your self-worth.

As you affirm your goals, take active steps to make them a reality. Transforming your mindset is a powerful tool for overcoming impostor syndrome and achieving your aspirations.
