At the core of choosing the right career for yourself is the question of how well you know yourself.

At the core of choosing the right career for yourself is the question of how well you know yourself. This sets the tone of several choices you make of which your career path is extremely significant.

So, even if you are not sure about who you are, this article seeks to guide you through the process of finding yourself and then discovering the best career fit for you.

So, here are four pointers in the direction of the right career for you:

  • Assess yourself

As we stated earlier, you can not choose the right career for yourself if you do not even know who you are. Hence, this career-discovery mission must begin with self-assessment so you can become aware of your values, interests, soft skills, and aptitudes. Likewise, you can take personality tests online to know and understand your personality traits. Some of these tests come with career choices for your personality type like 16personalities. You can also decide to work with a career counselor or other career development professionals who can help them navigate this process. With this step, you have covered half the ground needed for you to realise the right career for you.

  • Outline your options

After (or before), you practice step one, you would want to outline your possible career choices to avoid getting overwhelmed by the need to make a decision. This would make it easier to sort through your options in order to find the best route. After you have your options down, you can cross out what isn’t exactly right, and narrow your options. It is good to keep an open mind and have as many options for yourself, so you have a lot to choose from. You should also rank your options from best to worst so you know your top pick and properly research the requirements for them.

  • Get a mentor

Preferably one that has experience in your proposed career. He or she could help you with insights to help you make sure you are making the right decision. The right mentor, will give you guidance and help boost your career. In fact, according to Forbes, 80% of CEOs attribute their success to having worked with mentors. Hence, you must be willing to learn and accept all the assistance they are willing to offer, including advice, a good network and answering questions about the industry. With a good mentor, you are well on your way to the top.

  • Strike a balance

As much as possible, find a balance between what you’re good at, what companies need, and what you like to do. That’s how you find the career made just for you. Rather than looking at job titles, consider your interests, hobbies, and skills, and then work out a common ground.

It helps to look at your work or volunteer experience. What did you enjoy doing in previous jobs? What did you dislike? These would go a long way in helping you better understand the tasks you enjoy and despise at work, which could also influence your career choice.

Choosing the right career is no easy feat, but with these tips, it could be almost a walk in the park.  Don’t forget to contact us to help with your CV and cover letter. As always, tweakmycontent.com has got you covered!
